The Ladue Field Hockey team defeated Clayton High School 7-0, on Friday, Sept. 5 in an exciting game.
Ladue had a dominant first quarter, leading by four in the first 10 minutes of the game. Junior Charlotte Wilson lifted the ball in after a pass from Annie Tilghman (11) for the first goal of the game. Wilson also scored the second goal by tipping a shot by Elle Kerner (12) into the back of the net. The third goal of the quarter was scored on a penalty corner. Senior McKenzie Durbin passed the ball out to Irene Murphy (10) who passed it back to Durbin for a speedy shot into the goal. For the last goal of the quarter, Melia Saffold (10) passed to Murphy who dribbled in for a quick hit at the top of the circle.
Clayton fought back in the second quarter, having two shots on goal and a corner. Ladue goalie, Mimi Tabsott (11), stopped them both. But, Clayton kept the Ladue offense at bay, allowing them no goals.
Tilghman quickly scored the fifth goal after the start of the third quarter by stealing the ball from a Clayton defender and dribbling to the goal, making a move on the goalie, and then shooting it into the net. The sixth goal was scored by a quick connection of passes down the field, eventually landing at sophomore Nora Gruninger’s stick. Gruninger slipped the ball through the defense to Murphy who quickly shot the ball to make Ladue lead by six.
Ladue scored a final goal in the last quarter of the game. Shots at the goalie from Vicky Derdoy (12) and Alex Press (11) were unsuccessful, but Durbin was able to collect the rebound and get a shot off to put the final score of Ladue’s win against Clayton at 7-0.
