English Club, a club centered on helping elementary school students in ESOL with their English skills, held its first meeting of the year Sept. 10 in Ms. Jaswal’s room. The club works with Dr. Diana Hsu, the Spoede Elementary School ESOL Specialist.
The meeting was led by co-presidents Kimmi Lin (12) and Cindy Liu (12). They each shared plans of how small groups will travel to Ladue elementary schools once a week to tutor students.
“We will help ESOL students with their English schoolwork and any other homework that they have while speaking in English,” Lin said. “For holidays, we will plan fun activities as a club to combine learning and games.”
Being a member of English club provides volunteer opportunities, teaching and leadership skills. Lin and Liu have both been members of the club for over a year, and have big plans for the club this school year.
“Last year, we had few members and only visited one elementary school,” Lin said. “This year, we want to expand in member size and locations, hopefully to two or more elementary schools.”
Lin and Liu are still determining club session dates, but each session will be 30 minutes a week after school at one of the elementary schools. Students of any grade level are encouraged to join, as both presidents plan to expand.
“Anyone can join the club, no requirements needed,” Lin said. “We highly encourage members that can speak a second language to join since they can communicate and connect better with the kids, but members that can only speak English and are patient and like to work with kids are as equally allowed.”
