Ten National Honor Society students volunteered Nov. 20 during their first hour class. They participated in Old Newsboys Day, passing out special edition newspapers of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch to cars driving by and collecting donations that will go towards supporting local children’s charities.
All members of the National Honor Society are required to complete eight volunteer hours each semester, totaling 16 hours throughout the school year. Despite the chilly and rainy weather, the student volunteer “newsboys” stayed outside and focused on maintaining positive attitudes.
“It was a fun way to earn our hours during the school day,” McKenzie Durbin (12) said. “The school year can get busy with homework and other activities, so it was good to get some of it done during school. Even though it was kind of cold, we still had a good time.”
Old Newsboys Day was established in 1957. Since its launch, they have raised over $11 million. This year, the Ladue students alone collected just over $650.
“The money we raised goes to a great cause, so it’s really great to be a part of something that will help so many people,” Durbin said.
