Q&A on English Club with Serenity Xu (10)

English Club attends Spoede Elementary School to help ESOL kids with English skills

Why did you join English Club? 


A: I figured it was a good way to kind of connect with the community and help some kids. 

What do you typically do at an elementary school? 

A: I just get to interact with the kids and try and help out with whatever activities we’re focusing on at that time. And I just try and help them practice their English skills.

What is your favorite memory from English Club so far? 


A: My favorite memory from English Club so far would probably be filling out a halloween book with Ati, [one of the kids I worked with].

Would you suggest others to join English Club? 

A: Yeah, I think it’s just a great way to be involved.

What do you hope for the future of the club? 


A: I hope more people are able to connect with kids and that the kids get more opportunities to just interact with people and practice their English skills.

"Most people try to [get] College Board credit which is first week of May or do the art for competition which is like a month or two from [Spring Break]," Ye said.

Pablo Flinn, an incumbent candidate, speaks at the Meet the Candidates Community Forum March 30. The four candidates were invited to speak to community members and answer presubmitted questions in a forum organized by the League of Women Voters. "Every day, I show up to be of service," Flinn said. "I do it outside and inside of this role. I don’t get anything from it, but the knowledge that I’m being of service. That’s why I was put here. I will listen, I will honor your voice. On the current board, we’re willing to lean on each other, listen to each other, have tough conversations with each other. I will continue to be part of that.”
On the Ballot
Team representatives Hotaru Murashita (11) and Regina Copeland (10) play rock paper scissors for the winning prize. The club hopes to continue to implement new meetings every year. “About a month ago, we pitched [the idea], and Madame Milford helped us obtain the croissants and jams,” Secretary Arlo Ziolkowski (11) said.

Zoe Mei (10), recipient of the Billy Michal Award, and her partner, Sydney Gao (10) pose with awards for their DECA project, EmpowerEd. The project developed into a central passion for Mei and something she would like to continue. "St. Louis is special in the way that there is always an opportunity to take a step further and deepen impact. I hope to expand the scale of EmpowerEd, and continue helping the families out at TAP.

Pondering his next move, Alex Zhang (10) plays a practice game against teammate Newman Shen (11) to prepare for his next round. Zhang holds a USCF rating of 2265 and finished with a perfect four points on Board 1. “I enjoy getting to represent and score for my team,” Zhang said. “It really means a lot.”

The Talking Rams' collection of trophies – representing decades of accomplishments – sits overlooking the multipurpose room. Under the guidance of Waterson and by supporting each other, team members have continued to succeed during this school year. "I'm trying to make sure the team gets what they need and has the resources they need," Waterson said. "But, students have been coaching each other and helping each other more than I have.
