W2 Communications students participate in rotational interviews with members of Ladue staff Nov. 21.
“I think it was really interesting to hear about the different teachers, because they all have different roles like counselor, regular teacher [or] coordinator,” Marah Swillinger (12) said. “I think it’s interesting to hear what all of them had to say about communication, since they all approach it differently in their different roles.”
The class focuses on helping students communicate effectively and learn to communicate in a variety of circumstances. Staff such as Superintendent Jim Wipke, Instructional Coach Rebecca Rubin-Schlansky and Counselor Shana Bobbit were invited to participate.
“Every year, my students interview somebody for their final project,” English teacher Julianne Crockett said. “When I first started doing interviews, students were very resistant to interviews. What I’ve done each year is tried to get them some practice with interviewing and talking to people. This year, we were talking about ‘who are good people that we could bring in?’ One of my classes is going off campus to meet people who are totally not related to the school, so that’ll be even different.”
Their current unit is centered on communicating with strangers. The activity allowed for real-world learning for students and teachers alike as they explored communicating in all different roles.
“I really liked how [Dr. Wipke] said ‘expect miscommunication,’” Crockett said. “Expect bad things to happen. It really reinforced a lot of what we talked about in unit two. It was really cool to see somebody else reiterating a message that we talked about.”
