After nearly two years, ‘Fallout’ returned to Amazon Prime Video 2025 with the premiere of its second season. Based on the widely popular post-apocalyptic role-play video game franchise by the same name, the series picks up soon after season one’s climactic finale.
Following the ending to season one, an unlikely pairing of Lucy (Ella Purnell) and the Ghoul (Walton Goggins) start off in pursuit of Lucy’s father, Hank (Kyle MacLachlan). We are reintroduced to the Ghoul as he is being tied up by a group of bandits who have taken him for his bounty. Lucy hides nearby, armed and ready to free the Ghoul and shoot the bandits to take their caps (currency in ‘Fallout’ universe). Unfortunately, Lucy’s reputable adherence to follow the “Golden Rule” or to “treat others as you would want to be treated” leads her to hesitate, and the plan falls apart as violence ensues.
The fight sequence between the Ghoul, Lucy and the bandits quickly re-immerses audiences into the world of ‘Fallout.’ The absurd weapons, the gore, the music; everything blends into the satire, action and post-apocalyptic survival that is uniquely ‘Fallout.’
What’s more prominent this season is Lucy’s navigation of the Wasteland, Earth’s nuclear-torn surface, as she is forced to confront the fact that the “Golden Rule” may not be applicable to the harsh world outside of the vault she grew up in. As the Wasteland continues to show its ruthless nature to Lucy, she must decide if she will adapt to its unforgiving ways or continue to follow the values she grew up with.
While the episode may seem slow to those ready to dive back into the crux of the plot, I think it does a good job of establishing the new dynamic between Lucy and the Ghoul that will surely develop as the season goes on and they are forced to work together. Additionally, the episode eases viewers into emerging plotlines such as the situation with Norm (Moisés Arias), Lucy’s brother, and Vault 31.
‘Fallout’ season two episode one, “The Innovator,” is a promising and exciting return to the story for fans of both the show and the video games. For avid game enjoyers, the show pays homage to game series, acting as a canonical continuation of the game lore rather than a new story entirely.
My thoughts after finishing the premiere are mostly positive. The episode stays engaging throughout its entire runtime and keeps the zany characteristics that fans loved in season one. While the pacing may be a bit of a downfall for some, the episode is very strong overall and would be entertaining for anyone looking for something fun to watch.
