Joji, an alternative R&B artist, released his fourth studio album: “Piss In The Wind,” Feb. 6. The album consists of 21 tracks. Joji in the past has had a maximalist approach to his past studio albums, but for his new studio album he decided to try approach by abruptly ending songs and opting for shorter track lengths.
I have listened to Joji since June 2024, when Joji decided to temporarily quit music. I listened to the album right after it released, and enjoyed contrast between the crazy beats and the melodic vocal. Here’s what I thought about each track.
- “PIXELATED KISSES”
Wow. I expected a depressing ballad, but boy I was wrong about this song. Immediately hit with intense electric beats. This is something a Playboi Carti fan would definitely enjoy. I also love the lyricism. I score PIXELATED KISSES a 8/10.
- “Cigarette”
The moody vocals make this track feel like you are walking through a dark alley in a mysterious city. It’s really repetitive though. 5.5/10.
- “Last of a Dying Breed”
The intro makes me feel like I’m floating on a cloud, literally ascending. When the beat starts though, it’s a whole different story. It feels like I’m running on a treadmill that never stops. 7/10.
- “LOVE YOU LESS”
The beginning gives “End of Beginning” by Djo vibes. Besides the intro, this song kind of drags. 5/10.
- “If It Only Gets Better”
This is a very forgettable song. I feel like if Dominic Fike was singing it, it would be much better. 4/10.
- “Love Me Better”
I love the beat. I don’t know why, but it feels like Joji is actually speaking to the listener. A controversial take, according to the Reddit thread for this album, but this is one of the better tracks. 7.5/10.
- “Piece of You (Giveon)”
I kind of get this song? I don’t like how slow this is because it doesn’t add any value to this maximist album. 2/10.
- “Hotel California”
I like the guitar stuff at the beginning. I also tend to like titles that appeal to me, because I want to live in California. Nothing unique though. 5/10.
- “Tarmac”
This is controversial, but I like this song. There is something about Joji singing about a tarmac that is slightly life changing. 7.75/10.
- “Forehead Touch the Ground”
I don’t have any thoughts about this track except that it’s too slow. Like, who’s forehead is touching the ground? 3/10.
- “Past Won’t Leave My Bed”
This song is the only song that has any trace of Joji’s past album’s vibes. I don’t really like it though. I only like the lyricism. 5/10?
- “Fade to Black (4batz)”
I’m confused. I have no idea what’s going on in this song. It’s like a whisper, then nothing. 0/10.
- “CAN’T SEE SH*T IN THE CLUB”
I expected a crazy beat because of the track title, but got nothing in return. It was so slow, definitely not something you would hear in a club. 1/10.
- “Sojourn”
Second best track in this album. Love it. Better than PIXELATED KISSES. This should have been titled CAN’T SEE SH*T IN THE CLUB, because it gives that vibe more. The lyricism is also top tier Joji. 10/10.
- “DYKILY”
I like it, but I feel like this song is kind of repetitive in terms of the beats compared to other songs on the album. 6/10.
- “Rose Colored (Yeat)”
The Yeat feature immediately caught my eye because I’m a fan. I like the fact that Yeat’s feature was well laid out. I’m also listening to it on repeat right now. 11/10.
- “Silhouette Man”
I’m literally “on the fence” about this one. This is difficult to give a certain rating. 5/10.
- “Fragments (Don Toliver)”
I feel like Don Toliver fans would enjoy this track. I have mixed feelings about the originality of Toliver’s songs, because they sound all the same. 5.75/10.
- “Horses to Water”
I only like the “do or die” part. This is like a toned down version of Cigarette, which was an okay song at best. 6/10.
- “Strange Home”
The track is subtly appealing only because it sounds like a track Joji would make, but not particularly striking. 7/10.
- “Dior”
While this song concludes the album, it does not serve as a strong closing track. Not the way to end an album. 1/10.
