The Foreign Language Department held a ceremony Nov. 11 to induct new members into their honors societies. The Latin, Spanish, French and German departments all participated in the event, honoring students for academic excellence in language classes.
“It was cool to see all of the languages together at the event,” Lila Meyers (12) said. “I didn’t know much about any of the other language honor societies, because I’m just the Social Media Manager of the French Honors Society, so it was really cool to see and hear the whole thing.”
The event began at 6 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. Parents and friends of inductees were invited to attend.
“The event started with a student introducing the agenda, as well as a couple administrators as guest speakers to talk about the achievement for the students,” Meyers said. “Then each honor society took a turn inducting their new members.”
With different guiding policies and requirements, each honor society is unique in the way they operate and accept members.
“The requirements to be inducted into the Spanish National Honor Society are to attend 3 meetings, do 5 hours of Spanish-related community service throughout each semester and maintain an A in Spanish,” newly inducted member Zoe Warticovschi (11) said.
Once students walked across the stage, they were presented with a certificate of membership and were officially inducted.
“After each induction, the officers led the new members in an oath in each of the languages,” Meyers said. “I had never heard Latin before really, so it was cool to hear how it sounded.
Language honor societies help students connect more with the language and culture they are learning about in many different ways.
“It means a lot to me to be a part of the Spanish National Honor Society because it is really important to learn about and spread the Spanish culture,” Warticovschi said. “I have some Spanish culture, my dad is Columbian, so it is important for me to learn the language to communicate and connect with them.”
