Students practiced taking portrait photos of the animals during the field trip which lasted the majority of the school day. “It was such a fun experience to be able to see so many different animals when I would otherwise be having a regular school day,” Isabella Plumb (12) said.
The photography classes took a field trip to the Saint Louis Zoo Nov. 13-14 to practice their photography skills and capture photos of the animals. Photo I students were in the midst of their Portrait Project where they were tasked to take photos of a subject, typically people or animals. Photo II students were working on their Passion Portraits, photographing people and their passions, and Surrealism Projects, turning ordinary moments into dreamlike photos.
The photography classes left after first period and spent the majority of the school day at the zoo. Students explored the different exhibits before eating lunch there and returning to school during last period.
“We didn’t have enough cameras for every student, so groups had to share one or two cameras and some students had to use their phones to take pictures,” Isabella Plumb (12) said. “We also had to be aware of the time to know when we would need to start heading back to the meeting spot.”
Christine Warner, the photography teacher, allowed students to split up and explore the exhibits they were each interested in.
“I loved taking pictures of the red panda,” Plumb said. “I visited its exhibit multiple times and captured it eating, climbing and sleeping with another red panda. I may have just gotten lucky with the timing, but that was my favorite animal to see.”
Plumb found that taking photos of animals created a new challenge that she doesn’t typically have when taking photos of people or objects.
“You don’t get to see a giraffe every day,” Plumb said. “Zoo animals are such unique and rare subjects. When you think of portrait photography, you’d usually think of pictures of people. Animals can be subjects of portraits too, and they allow room for so much creativity to blossom from the photographer. They don’t listen to you and pose in a specific way, so you have to do all the work to best capture their essence, whether that be through capturing the right moment, using unique angles, or through editing.”
Through this experience, Plumb was able to gain a new, unique opportunity to practice her photography skills.
“I don’t usually get the chance to take pictures of animals,” Plumb said. “Being able to photograph different animals in different environments made me use all the [photography] skills I have learned in and outside of class.”

This was just a fantastic learning experience! The students will remember this fun day and all that they learned about photography and applying what they learned in class!
