The Sociedad Hispánica de Amistad met Feb. 11 to celebrate the Spanish language through various activities. The meeting brought together Spanish students from all levels, even a student not enrolled in Spanish.
“We immerse ourselves in the Spanish language by doing presentations and talking to each other in Spanish,” Josephine Saleeby (9) said.
Meetings vary based on the occasions and celebrations coming up. Some meetings focus on specific holidays, where members learn and celebrate the holiday through different interactive activities.
“We also do fun activities related to what’s going on during [that] time,” Saleeby said. We did scary stories in Spanish for Halloween.”
Members met to celebrate Valentine’s day with Valentine’s Day themed cookies and cupcakes. However, the purpose of the meeting quickly turned into something more than a celebration.
“The purpose of the meeting [was] to brainstorm ideas of what to raise money for and how to raise money,” Saleeby said. “We usually don’t have a lot of time in a meeting so we want to plan out ideas for what we dedicate our time to for the next meetings.”
The club wants to hold a bake sale to collect money for a good cause. They also made a plan on what baked goods each member will be bringing in.
“[We plan] to donate [the money] to schools in need around the St. Louis area,” Spanish teacher Haydee Taylor-Arnold said.
With the plan made and in place, the club will continue moving forward with arrangements to make this bake sale possible.
“We will be contacting Ms. Strohbeck to know the process to have our bake sale approved,” Taylor-Arnold said. “Our bake sale will be during the week of Feb. 24 to 27.”
