The Young Democrats held its first meeting in Room 2109. Nov. 12. Club president Henry Madden (10) began an introductory slide show and went over current issues in the U.S., listing ways that these problems could be curbed. Ladue has many clubs that advocate for a certain cause, but the Young Democrats are unique for their alignment with the Democratic party specifically.
“I don’t think there’s any other club at Ladue that’s explicitly political,” Vice President Jackson Lloyd (10) said. “Because we do have the goal of spreading the ideas associated with the party.”
During this inaugural meeting, the members discussed volunteer opportunities to get involved in. Club officer Ellie Lercher (10) listed organizations such as Food Outreach, the Ronald McDonald House and the Jewish Food Pantry. The club is directing their focus towards food pantries to counteract SNAP benefits being cut. However, the Young Democrats will still be involved in a range of community service opportunities.
“We think we’re going to be taking a role in specifically community and even charity events,” Lloyd said. “We’ve been discussing canvassing our community to fundraise and spread awareness on upcoming elections.”
The Young Democrats are heavily student-driven. Their mission is to uplift students’ political voices, contribute to the community and maintain Democracy through a conflict-ridden political climate.
“I’ve enjoyed being with some of the people who we have in the club and preparing for what we’re going to be doing this year,” Lloyd said. “I think we can really do a lot of good for our school, and I’m looking forward to being able to do that.”
